Current mood:accomplished

I started it way back in 2001. I barely touched it at all for months at a time, during the Great Job Search Angst of 2002. It's flawed, it's a first effort, and will need plenty of hard work before it's ready for public consumption. But...

I did it. I wrote a novel. I finished what I started, proved I had it in me, proved I'm not just a quitter, that I can push past my own laziness and fears. I wrote a BOOK.

I will now be hokey and quote Chariots of Fire:

Eric Liddell: I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.

That's how I feel about writing fiction. There are any number of things I love to do, that give me a sense of accomplishment. But when I write, I'm doing what I was made for. Nothing is better than that.

And another quote from the same source, because it just suits my amazement that after starting books all my life I finally FINISHED ONE:

Eric Liddell: Then where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within.

Now I know that I can see my races to the end. And I've never felt stronger.

I knew I was fairly close, but I didn't realize until last night that if I pushed myself at all today, I'd finish.

I've had teary moments, along with fist-pumping, and sitting there thinking "I just can't believe I did this." And I just got back from an Alton Brown book signing, where I watched him do his thing, and realized, "Hey, if all goes well, that could be me someday. Probably not so much with the huge crowds, because NSM with the TV show either, but still."

Susan makes with the novel. Doesn't it feel good?

But I know for myself that when I type those last three stars at the end, I get this odd little momet of, whoa. My house is empty.

I had that moment while waiting in a long line at an Alton Brown book signing tonight. I thought, "If only I had my notebook, I could be working on my novel," and then realized no, at this point I'd need a chunk of manuscript with me to edit instead. Felt weird.

Wait til you have agent or agents or editor or editors reading it.

Remember to lean on me when that happens. I can get pretty zen about it, providing the wait isn't too long between submit and comment, but it can get pretty nervous-making the first time out. I'll soothe you and say calming things.
